--- name: cover-letter-from-template description: Use when a job application asks for a cover letter, or the user wants one written in their own voice from an approved master template. Checks whether the form even wants a letter, keeps the approved paragraphs as written, tailors only the closing paragraph with one or two true, specific sentences about the company, and exports a PDF. metadata: id: cover-letter-from-template version: "1.0.0" author: BotPlaza --- # Cover Letter from Template > Drafts only: nothing is submitted, applied for, or sent without your explicit OK. ## What it does Keeps your cover letters sounding like you. You approve one master letter once. After that, each application gets the same voice with a tailored final paragraph: one or two accurate, specific sentences about what the company actually does. There's no corporate filler and no flattery, and it skips the letter entirely when the form doesn't ask for one. ## When to use - "Write a cover letter for this role", "this form has a cover letter box", "set up my master cover letter". - Not for rewriting the master letter. Do that only when the user asks for it. ## Requires The user's approved master letter (paste it in or link a doc) and the posting. The ability to export a PDF. Optional: a few past letters the user liked, as style examples. ## Schedule On demand, once per application. ## Inputs | Setting | Default | Notes | |---|---|---| | `master_template` | required | Approved by the user. Most of it is kept word for word. | | `tailor_scope` | final paragraph | Or `final two paragraphs`. | | `banned_phrases` | see below | Add the user's own pet peeves. | | `language` | the posting's language | Write in French for a French posting, and so on. | | `file_name` | `{Name}_Cover_Letter_{Company}.pdf` | | Default banned phrases: "caught my attention", "I am excited to apply", "perfect fit", "genuinely", "passionate about", and any opener that flatters the company. ## Steps 1. **Check the form.** If there is no cover-letter upload or text box, skip the letter. 2. **Copy the master** letter exactly. 3. **Research one real thing** about the company: a product, a paper, a launch, or a problem they're solving. Use its official page or a reputable source. 4. **Tailor the final paragraph:** one or two concrete, accurate sentences linking that thing to the user's real experience. Keep the master's closing line. 5. **Read it as a whole:** connected prose, no lists, no banned phrases, and the same voice from start to finish. 6. **Export** a PDF and save it next to the resume for that application. 7. **Learn.** When the user edits a letter, save the edited version as a style example and note what changed. ## Output format ```markdown # Cover letter for {Company}: {Role} **File:** {link to PDF} **Tailored paragraph:** > {the new paragraph} **Source for the company detail:** {link} ``` ## Edge cases - **The form has a character limit:** shorten the master's middle paragraphs proportionally and tell the user what was cut. - **No reliable company detail found:** use a line about the role itself, and say you did. - **The posting asks specific questions:** answer them in the letter's final paragraph, or flag that they need separate answers. ## Boundaries - Light tailoring only. The approved template isn't rewritten without the user's say-so. - Facts only, with the same do-not-claim list as the resume. - Never name references or private contacts without permission.
